Alaska Rainbow Trout Fishing

Fly fishing the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers for monster rainbows is nothing short of legendary. The second you feel the strike, hold on, the war has just begun. The drag starts humming the sweet sound of a big fish, your heart is pounding, the sweat is flowing, suddenly the pristine waters erupt exposing the monster that is attached to your line...Troutzilla.

Battling one of these monsters will challenge the most experienced fly anglers. We are well seasoned in the unusual fly fishing techniques that are used on the Kenai. With an annual salmon run in the millions, Kenai rainbows naturally feed on salmon, and salmon eggs. Our technique is an egg, or flesh pattern that is dead drifted, much like nymphing. Like fly fishing in the lower 48, when an angler matches the hatch, the final outcome can be very rewarding.

On the Kenai River matching the hatch means selecting the proper size, and shade of an egg or flesh pattern depending on the time of season. Trout and Char can be targeted from mid June through October, the best time to put your skills to the test would be from mid August through October.

Guided Alaska Fishing Tours only uses the best fly fishing gear; Sage, Scott rods, and Ross Reels will give you an edge when battling trophy bow's. Tying into a Kenai rainbow trout on fly fishing gear is an experience that will stay with you for a life time.

Fly Fishing for Alaska Rainbow Trout

Fly fishing for rainbow trout in Alaska is slightly different to fly fishing in other locations. We use a different casting style and different set up, which makes it much easier to learn than traditional fly fishing. It only takes about 15 minutes on average to pick this method of fishing up.

Alaska Rainbow Trout Fishing Trip

“…we had such an exceptional day of catching large rainbow trout on the Kenai River . We immediately caught fish with Nigel, and we also fished areas that other guides routinely passed up which worked out well, because the two largest fish we caught that day were in areas that others drifted by… we would recommend (him) to anyone who wants to land large rainbows on the Kenai River."

Todd Bennett and George Pess
