When you go fly fishing for salmon there are some specific things you should know. The different species of Alaskan fish require different methods. A guided fly fishing trip saves you years of learning and gets you to the fish right away.
When fishing for Red Salmon, we use hand-made “coho” flies with weights attached a manner that keeps the flies near the bottom of the river. We flip the fly upstream and let it drift down through streams of Reds making their way towards their spawning beds.
When we fly fish for Silver Salmon, we use more traditional methods and agitator flies. We have to make sure to strip the line slowly as Silvers can spook easily. Ironically, their strikes are very aggressive.
While King Salmon have been caught on heavy fly fishing gear, we generally don’t fly fish for them. In addition to being extremely challenging, it can get expensive replacing rods.
For Rainbow Trout, we use beads to imitate salmon eggs and flesh flies to simulate the flesh of spawned out Salmon.
We use top quality fly fishing reels
